My New Favorite Question

My New Favorite Question

How many times have you heard or thought any of the below?

  • "I'm so overwhelmed."

  • "I think I'm headed for a mental breakdown."

  • "I can't think straight."

  • "If only there were two of me."

  • "I need hired help."

A few, right?

These are NORMAL HUMAN thoughts. If you have them, or hear them, it means you are human, but the difference between those who choose 'growth' and those who choose 'stuck', is HUGE.

Mindset is EVERYTHING!

Sometimes when the counter piles up with dishes or there are one too many articles of clothing strewn around the house, I feel that sense of overwhelm and frustration creeping in. Usually I turn to blaming other family members for their lack of contribution, then I blame myself for not doing a better job teaching them how to pick up after themselves. Neither of these thoughts serve the greater good.

My new favorite question applies to these exact situations.

"The Model"- a Brooke Castillo process, with an Amanda Kingsley twist...

SITUATION
- Lots to do

MY THOUGHT ABOUT THE SITUATION
- “I can't do it all.”

THE FEELING THIS THOUGHT TRIGGERS
- Overwhelm

THE ACTION I TAKE FROM THIS FEELING
- Blaming others for not contributing or wishing things were different.

THE RESULT OF THIS ACTION
-Still lots to do, only now I'm mad in addition to overwhelmed.

ASK (Is this in alignment with my WHY?)
-No

The Model applied for realignment:

SAME SITUATION
- Lots to do

MY NEW THOUGHT ABOUT THE SAME SITUATION
(which happens to be my favorite new question)
- “What's the next logical step?”

THE NEW FEELING THIS THOUGHT TRIGGERS
- Control

THE NEW ACTION I TAKE FROM THIS FEELING
- Checking something of the list or delegating a task to another person.

THE RESULT
-
Relief

ASK (Is this in alignment with my WHY?)
-YES!

WIN!

I hope you'll try this question on for size and tell me how it's going in the comments or in a private message. It's working wonders in my life.

What's the next logical step?
